I think every office has the "special" someone. In our office, this person is in a clerical position, but has already been told that he will get a promotion into a position that is way over his head. In this case, his mistakes become my problem as he is untouchable.
It never ceases to amaze me that incompetency is rewarded...

Based on what you described, I'd just put up with him. It doesn't sound serious.
I once took an interpersonal skills course called "Dealing with Difficult People." They listed the 12 most common personality types and explained that in any random group of people you will get 1 or 2 of each type. Yes, there was the "Brown Noser" listed. Then came the shocker. They turned it around on us and askd us which one most closely resembled ourselves. I blushed a bit and pointed to the "Know-It-All"!! LOL!!
Although someone irritates you at work, there are a few points you need to consider. First, is this person's behaviour interfering with your ability to do work? If yes, then you need to take some kind of action. Otherwise, they're just irritating. Live with it!! Also keep in mind, you may have habits that irritate them or others! No one is perfect! Don't expect that everyone has to accommodate you. You need to realize that you need to accommodate others as well.
Based on what your wrote, it dosn't sound like this guy is that bad. Sure, hisbehaviour is irritating but it's not so bad it's preventing you from doing work or causing you serious distress. Relieve your stress by making jokes about him. I come up with nicknames, "The Brownnoser!", "Mr. Suckface!", ... Also keep in mind that I'm sure someone else at work finds you irritating. Someone called me "Cliffy" at work and it made me realize I had to tone down my style.
I doubt I'm going to win Best Answer for this but, hey, do you want the truth?

Sue, be sympathetic. The individual is simply trying to advance his station in life. You should be supportive rather than negative. The world needs more go-getters like your "brown noser". Change your attitude, talk to the guy, find out what his goals and aspirations are, and find ways to help this person be a better salesman. You will feel much better about yourself and you will enjoy your workplace much more than you currently do.
Good luck and be the best you can be at whatever you do.
