Ummm... Maybe it has something to do with the fact that thousands of substance-induced people are squeezed into a small area and moving wildly.

I've never subjected myself to a mosh pit because I know lots of people who have and sometimes they'll get out of it with missing jewelery, broken bones, missing shoes, bruises and the like. Personally I see no reason to put myself in a position to be hurt. I know lots of people do it and have no problems but it would only take once. Besides that you are trusting complete strangers to hold you up there and not drop you on your head. It's fun to watch though.

Because people who tell them about mosh pits exaggerate about what happens, they can be brutal, but its usually the people who want to get hurt hitting the other people who want to get hurt. In the ones I have been in, there is the hidden respect you have for one another. Like me, if your in it to have fun and do some shoving, other people wont come to you and try to cheap shot you, they give a good shove back. Accidents do happen, but they happen everywhere. I was last at the Lamb of God concert, the pit was awesome, but the sad thing is I hurt myself leaving when I tripped down the stairs.

Honestly..I think it has a lot to do with AGE. I know what you are talking about. My experience has been that kids, that is, are usually the ones who are not only scared of the pit, but intimidated by the crowd as well. For whatever reason..I don't know? They listen to the music? But again..I believe its just the age. You can avoid the pit easily..go have a drink, go talk to some friends, go to an area where there's no slamming. Its not that bad. Their friends who probley went to a show, boosted up how crazy the show was, and then I guess that is what intimidates them. Anyhow, that is my opinion.

They are probably worried because it is something they have never been around before so they do not know wht to expect. Pits have a bad reputation and a lot of people have heard some bad stories about them therefore it is human nature to have some concerns about pits.

Ah - that brings back fond memories of stage dives and pogoing....To answer the question - If you view what goes on from outside - it does look a little bit violent at times, and to be honest, you are awarded numerous medals on your shins and arms if you get in to a good one....But it is fun

Because they look scary if you're outside looking in. Can be easily avoided though, but you wouldn't know that if you've never been to a gig.
