I have a Windows XP with onboard audio and haven't had any problems until about a year ago. My sound began messing up when I played many of the games in my extensive collection. Sometimes, as in the case of Lego Star Wars 2, just entering the options menu fixes this problem. In other games, most notably Splinter Cell, the sound will mess up every five or six minutes, the only temporary cure being to leave the game and load it up again.
The problem sounds like white noise or static and I can't seem to find a cure. I updated my sound drivers but that didn't help.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I have something similliar to this problem sometimes because my sound some times skips a lot. I think it has to do with too many programs running in the background. Whenever it happens to me I press ctrl+alt+delete, then the processes tab, and stop a program/s that I don't need to run from running and it's fixed. I think you also have mute the volume off and then on again after that to reset the sound because I don't rtemember if that's also a necessity.

It sounds like:

Damaged speakers

Not a faulty sound card. Personally from experience static means several things. The spears are not magnetically shielded and are picking up extra signals from radios, or any other wireless device, including mobile phones etc.

The other problem may be simply that you have been playing audio too loud and hence have damaged the speaker system.

I would look into new speakers.

You also stated you downloaded the latest drivers, so that should not be a problem ensuring you updated the correct drivers.

Well, aside from the obvious, like checking all the wires, you might try downloading the newest driver for you sound card. I think that could be the most obvious fix. The drivers sometimes get clobbered and have to be reinstalled.

Run DevMgmt.MSC to open the gadget manager (you may be brought on for the administrator password). strengthen the Sound type. suitable-click the HDMI audio gadget (no longer the sound card), click Disable and likely. Then, suitable-click and click enable. The gadget could reinitialize suitable. likely the default playback gadget configuration has a issue. Open the Audio gadgets applet contained in the administration Panel. If the default isn't HDMI audio, pick it and click ok. If the default IS HDMI audio, pick the different output gadget and click practice, then reselect HDMI audio and click practice.
