Can you please tell me is it worth while? And if it is OK what are the advantages/disadvantages of having it? I don't have speakers for my computer nor a microphone, will I have to get one if I do get Skyp? Thank you to all who reply.

Skype is used for IP telephony. If you do not have speakers or a microphone than it is of no use for you. It is for someone that wants to make telephone calls using their computer instead of their standard land-line telephone.

Skype is a very interesting internet communication system.

You can use it as a text chat system - like AIM or Yahoo Messenger, but that doesn't even come close to its capabilities.

If you have a way to get sound into and out of your computer, such as with a headset or with speakers and a microphone, you can talk to people around the world. If you're willing to pay a small annual fee, you can also use skype to call their regular telephones.

In addition, you can now use skype without a computer - all you need is a wireless network connected to the internet. There are now Skype handsets available that work a lot like regular phones.

ive got to agree with everyone here, Skype is amazing. you dont need to get speakers or a mic, but then you cant make calls which kills half the fun, you can still have text conversations like AIM though. it's a free download and PC to PC calls are free. the webcam feature is also nice. even if you dont get speakers (headphones should work there anyway and a mic shouldnt cost much) if someone you know says you should get then they'll be on and you can at least text each other

eYou will need speakers and a mic. I have used Skype for some time and found it very interesting. You can also connect a camera and have two way visual conversations.
