What can I do to entertain my 9 month old? He's not crawling or walking yet. He LOVES his excersaucer, but I want to slowly stop him from using it, because he's getting so big, and I want him to move around on his own. He refuses to go on his stomache, and when he falls over he can't help himself up. Any ideas on what we can do all day. I live in Canada, so it's very cold outside right now. When the warm weather comes we'll be outside all day long, but until then, I'm running out of ideas!

I know walkers have shown that, which is why I want to stop using it, I have already noticed this. That wasn't my question.

As soon as I put him on his stomache, he rolls right over!

Just for your information, I come on here when he is having his nap, or when his Daddy is playing with him, so don't judge me when you have no idea who I am.

whatever you do, make sure he gets time on the floor, or he won't figure it out very quickly. Give him some pots and pans and a wooden spoon. Take him around the house with you and describe your chores to him. All my kids were walking by at least 10 months so I really didn't have this problem, but I had a whole other set of issues with that! lol Good luck and you're a great mommy (and a fellow Canadian at that!)

My boyfriend's niece is 10 months old. A month or two ago she started crawling around kind of like an inch worm, and now she's crawling like any other baby. What started her crawling was wanting to go after a toy (or in her case, newspapers to tear up.) so I'd try finding something your baby likes, lay him down near it on his stomach, and eventually he'll start inching towards it with his legs. But I think the main thing is to stop using the walker. Good luck!

Sing with him, involving him by accentuating words with a tickle or a squeeze or a poke. Play lots of music all kinds. (Btw much as some people hate it, Mozart really does help your childs development!) Obviously all babies love to be thrown around....tiring work, but great for toning arms! Read stories with him, he wont understand, but he can enjoy the rhymmes and bright colours in the book. All of this will actually stimulate his physical development too! When you're singing with him, hold him in a standing position and 'dance' him in your lap. Btw, tissues, if you dont mind wasting a box, are great fun! You pull one out, and another one pops up!
Lots of physical games, classics like peakaboo and bash the castle (even if you have to do the building and the bashing!)
When he's playing alone give him lots of differant objects he can move or make sounds with, if a ball (or a tomatoe, he'll put it in his mouth anyway!) rolls away enough times, the chances are he'll work out how to get to it at some point.
And he's gorgeous btw, if thats him!At the cute chubby stage:)

Have you tried certain toys that are designed to encourage tummy time? There is one toy that a cousin gave me that rolls. It has balls you put inside of it and babies push it around on their stomach. There are also mats that may distract him long enough so that he will play for a short while on his stomach. We have a play gym that I use as a mat and it has all sorts of things to pull at and bite. I think this is what really got my daughter interested in tummy time. Another brilliant tool is a mirror. If you can get a baby mirror and put it on the floor, your son may find it fascinating to look at himself while he is on his stomach. I know what you mean about being stuck inside during the winter. I have been bundling up my7 month old daughter and taking her for walks despite the climate. As long as its not snowing and their isn't a severe wind chill, we go out almost everyday. She loves it. You can also get some teacher oriented books that have songs and play rhymes to fill in the time. When you feel your son is over tummy time and floor time you can work on language. We listen to music and I dance with her. Its great excersise for me and she loves it. I do offer breaks throughout the day with a couple of tv shows, Sesame Street and maybe an afternoon show.( I've heard the controversy over tv so that is something you will have to decide for yourself) I also joined a "Music Together"class that meets once a week, but depending on your financial status this may not be an option. I went to the local library and they offer story time for older infants. I was planning on joining an infant swim group that meets once a week after the music together class is finished. I just recently joined a mommy group but becasue of the snow we haven't met yet. That may be a great way to fill in the time. Maybe you can meet some other moms and your son can play with other babies. The link I used is Meetup.com.

THE SWINGS! My 9 month previous loves the swings you may visit the park or positioned a swing set interior the exterior. provided that he's not strolling yet he loves his exersaucer I positioned diverse toys around so he dosen't become bored. Is he crawling? positioned a blanket down on the floor and positioned toys all around it like a citadel you may lay in there with him and according to risk seize a cat nap on an identical time. My 9 month previous desires to be moved around plenty too yet loves watching me cleansing, preparing, dancing and singing!

My suggestion is to give him tummy time anyway. Lay him on his tummy and place some of his favorite things a short distance away. He should have been crawling already and it's important you work on his mobility. You could skip right over crawling to walking as you hold his hands - I have heard of kids who never crawled. 9 months is also a good age for clapping and singing nursery rhymes.

You need to start getting him use to being on his tummy. Put somthing he wants infront of him. The worst that could happen is he cries. And crying never hurt no one. It just hurts us parents. GIve him toys on the floor he can sit and play with. Tupperware containers and spoons. Blocks, soft books

Put him on his tummy, if he does not like it has he even learned to roll over. if not now he can start learning with your help. It helps with the brain development to. If i put my leg here and push this happens. Makes for good trial and error. he will use these same skills when learning to crawl and to walk. have a good day and good health to you and yours.,
it is nice and sunny in Alberta today, spring is coming!

it doesn't matter if he rolls over, put him on the floor, with a whole buch of toys, some soft music, or a tv on, and let him play. He might cry for a while, in the beginning, until he learns how to play on his own.

My son always like to chew on things, so try giving him a cold carrot or piece of celery to chew on.

Try sitting down with him and teaching him how to crawl. I actually had to move my sons knees and legs in to the crawling position, to teach him. Teach him how to shake his head "no" or wave goodbye.

Find a play group like "Gymboree" where he can be around other babies, and play with toys you might not have at your house.
Good Luck

OK Canadiac's, It's not just up to "A" "he's not out of it yet. What I would do is this get small portions of clothing or items ie. food toy. Coach the little person into moving you'll have the babe walkin in no time. Question what happened to the infant on the lower frontal abdoman? Reverse the prosess, move forward. I agree with removing him from his excersaucer, some time in the is alright, but it is not going to teach him to crawl. or walk..
Some babies don't walk till later, so your alright..
Time on the floor is the best thing, it gives them strength and Independence. It'll work for you...Not to worry..
