A) x = 2, x = 3
B) x = 6, x = -1
C) x = -6, x = 1
D) none of the above

3. Solve by Factoring: x2 - 2x + 1 = 0

To solve by factoring, the equation must equal 0 first. So that's fine in 2 and 3, but for 1 you must add 9x to both sides getting
3x^2 + 9x = 0.

This factors by Distributive Property to be 3x(x + 3) = 0
If either factor equals 0, the whole problem will equal zero. So find what makes (x+3) = 0. That's -3. So 0 and -3 are the two answers.

2. This factors by "FOIL" to be (x-1)(x+6)=0 so again see what makes each part come out zero.

3. This also factors by FOIL to be (x-1)(x-1)= 0. Since both factors are the same there will only be one answer, whatever makes x-1 come out zero.

Ans:1.C) x = 0, x = -3
Explanation
3x^2=-9x
3x^2+9x=0
3x(x+3)=0
x(x+3) =0
x=0 or x=-3

2.C) x = -6, x = 1
Explanation
x^2 + 5x - 6 = 0
(x+6)(x-1)=0
x=-6 or x=1
3.C) x = 1
Explanation
x^2 - 2x + 1 = 0
(x-1)^2=0
(x-1) =0
x =1

Solve by Factoring: 3x2 = -9x
3x² + 9x = 0
3x(x + 3) = 0
The solution: 3x = 0 or (x + 3) = 0, so, x= 0 or x = -3.

2. Which choices for x, sum to: +5 & when multiplied equals -6, as in the original equation?

3. Which answers add to -2 & when multiplied equal +1?

1.3x2 = -9x
3x2+9x=0
3x(x+3)=0
3x=0, x+3=0
x=0, x=-3
The answer is C.

2. x2 + 5x - 6 = 0
x2 + 6x-x - 6 = 0
x(x+6) -1(x+6)=0
(x-1) (x+6)=0
x=1, x=-6
The answer is C

3.x2 - 2x + 1 = 0
x2 - x - x + 1 = 0
x(x-1) -1(x-1)
(x-1) (x-1)
x=1, x=1
The answer is C
