My brother keeps telling me I need to lower the action on my guitar by shaving the saddle and the nut down a bit. If I do this, will it affect the sound quality of the guitar which I happen to like?

it will affect the sound quality slightly. not to much to be worried about. just be careful if your lowering the action it will make your guitar easier to play but make sure you know "EXACTLY" what your doing or you will be buying a new saddle and trying again. id suggest taking it to a lutheir and letting them do it if you plan on it. if the only reason your doing it is because your brother says to but you like how it plays and the tone leave it alone.

The guitar will not be as loud as before. Though it may be easier to fret. It's a touchy task and I would recommend you have a luthier do it. The intonation may change. The ability of the guitar to be in tune up and down the fret board.

If you like the way the guitar plays and sounds don't mess with it. I suggest you try to play a similar or same guitar with a lower action first to see if you like it.
