a vegitarian diet? I would love to have a snake as a pet (A small, harmless one) but could never do it if I have to fed him other animals, even if they are already dead. Isn't there some kind of 'snake food' available at petshops, you know, like 'guinea pig food' and 'dog food'...? If not, what would these vegitarian snakes eat?

Hey thanks guys. I suspected that there was no such think as veggie eating snakes, but my friend kept insisting there was. Anyway, don't worry, I will not be getting a snake as I know I would not be able to feed it other animals, or let it starve of course. I would never get a pet that I couldn't care for in the best way possible. Maybe I'll stick to the fluffy variety of pets for now, but a lizard is a great idea instead of a snake too!

Snakes are carnivores. They can't digest vegetation. While there are "snake sausages" available online which are basically just ground up mice and rats, a snake naturally eats other animals whole. If you are squeamish about feeding other animals to your pet, then I would recommend getting a plant.
In short... there is NO such thing as a vegetarian snake.

Snakes are carnivores, they only eat meat. There is no such thing as a vegetarian snake. A snake would not survive on greens, it's body is not made up to digest it. If you can't handle feeding a snake, you should get a different pet. Maybe an iguana? Here is info on them http://www.drkreger.com/iguanas.html#food

No, absolutely not. They are predators and don't eat any veggies directly, just the partially digested stuff inside their prey. They can, however, be taught to eat prekilled food: you can get pinkies (newborn mice) frozen for a small snake and mover up to larger prey. Some can eat crickets and various worms, live. The snake MUST be taught as a youngster to eat it dead, though, as it's not their nature. Find a reputable pet store or local person knowledgable about snakes and ask about teaching snakes to eat dead prey.

That is NOT true. Snakes cannot properly metabolise vegetarian foods, and every attempt to do so, or to raise them on any artificial foods, has met with failure.

This is a classic example of the 'Golden Rule of Pet Keeping'-"keep your pets as happy and healthy as humanly possible. If you cannot do this, don't keep that pet."

You might want to look at something like Bearded Dragon lizards instead?

I would suggest do your homework if you wanna snake there is more to it then just ploping it into a tank.......But smaller snake species may do well eating pinky mice or cricketts you neeed do research it. As far as snakes eating veggies NO...wrong type or reptiles..if you want a good snake to research look into a ball python...great 1st time snake. easy to care for. always feed them dead mice or rats never live unless u are feeding them pinkeys and use hemostates. Good luck....Oh and if feeding a snake to you is diturbing then dont get one cuz they have to eat every 5-7 days as they grow and 10-12days or longer when they reach adulthood. Get a lizard they eat veggies and crikets or meal worms.Just research what ever you decide.Good luck...
