It varies, depending on your operating system and whether you want the IP address of your computer or what other people on the internet 'think' your IP address is.

If you are on a home network that connects to the internet through some sort of firewall or a cable or dsl modem with firewall capabilities, there will be two IP addresses you need to be concerned with. The first will be the true IP address of your machine. This address is typically a private IP address beginning with either a 10, a 192.168. or more rarely 172. Such addresses are not for use over the internet and are for 'private' use on personal or corporate networks. You can find this address on Windows 95/98 machines by clicking 'Start->Run' and typing 'WINIPCFG' and clicking OK. On Windows 2000/XP/Vista you can goto Programs->Accessories and start a command prompt where you can enter the command 'ipconfig'. If you have two or more computers on a home network, this would be the address to use to connect to the other machines.

If you connect to the internet through a router of some sort, it typically uses something called Network Address Translation to 'hide' your private address which can't be used on the internet and instead it will substitute the public IP address of the router which can be used on the internet. You can find this address by going to a web site like http://whatismyipaddress.com/ . This address is what you would use if someone out on the internet wanted to connect to your machine.

It can be confusing, but it boils down to this. If you need to know your IP address so someone on the internet can try to connect to your machine, use a web site like http://whatismyipaddress.com/. If you have more than one computer attached to a home network, and you need to connect to one of those machines, use the commands I gave above to figure out your private IP address.

Also, please note sometimes just knowing your IP address isn't enough. If someone on the internet wants to connect to your machine and you use some sort of internet router to connect to the internet, you will often need to make modifications to your internet router to tell it what to allow in, and which PC to allow it to (which will require you to know your private IP).

Depends on the operating system.

Assuming you are on WinXp you could type "cmd" in the "run" field of your start menu.

That will bring up a black rectangle with a command prompt. From there type "ipconfig" and it will tell you.
