I would suggest the Flagstaff area to be close to good hospitals, relatively safe, and for cooler-than-scorching summer temperatures. Elevation is 7000 feet and located in beautiful, and calming, pine forest.

Compared to summer bugs in northern states, I would say bugs in general are less of a nuisance here. There are certainly fewer mosquitoes and biting flies. Of course there are spiders, scorpions, and killer bees, but their danger is seriously overrated. FYI, I grew up in Canada so I know what summer bugs are like up there. Bugs are simply not the issue to be concerned about in Arizona....rather it is the summer heat in desert areas.

A high of 80s not gonna happen in Arizona. It is always really hot or too darn cold (desert cold is a different kind of cold, hard to explain, chills the bones at 60). Bugs will depend on the area..how close are the canals, etc. Some areas have issues, others you see a lot of geckos and such but they eat the bugs. The issue in the outlying areas these days seems to be keeping the wandering coyotes and bears from coming out of the hills are eating your dog. You might want to look at a couple of the retirement communities. It seems like the homes there are cheaper than other areas for some reason and they start at age 55 and up. Here they are 'active living communities' so really it is just a neighborhood that keeps kids out :-) Sun City is the largest (a city in itself) but there are some nice ones out in East mesa too (check Guadalupe & Ellsworth)....and no coyotes :-)

The Phoenix metro area, Tucson, and Flagstaff are the major areas in Arizona. Phoenix and Tucson get temps of over 110 in the summer and Flagstaff is high up in the mountains and sees snow every year.

Areas in the high country that don't get as cold as Flagstaff (although it still snows) are Prescott, Camp Verde, Payson, and Yarnell. All (except for Yarnell but it's not too far from Prescott or Wickenburg) are fairly well populated and have much by the way of ranch properties.

Bugs, scorpions, spiders are present but they aren't scary and overwhelming.

I would have to agree w/ Az_Imag.

I've lived all over the valley & it's get'g costly here.

Prescott ~dont even think about it. I saw a house there that was a 1 bedrm for over $300,000 & that was the cheapest part of town too.

Flag is the way to go. Lots of areas up there have houses w/ land so U're not bump'd up to Ur neighbor & r still close enough to everything U need.
My friend's dad lives off of I-40 & Butler & has a half acre or more. U couldnt get that anywere west or south of Flag for the price.

Even where I am in Wittmann, U couldnt. Land is goin up up up so Flag is the place to go.

Maybe even Payson. Not sure what the prices r like there.

What about flagstaff? If you are coming from the rust belt the winters will be milder than what you are used to, and the summers dont get so dag gone hot like in phoenix.

i would look into other cities besides the phoenix area such as payson, flagstaff, prescott, sedona, even tucson. phoenix is too crowded, too hot, too much traffic. if you like cooler weather...i would definitely look into flagstaff.
