1. Newer DVD`s use dual layer technology so the laser can read the data on both layers of the DVD.
2. Lenses on DVD players loose their opacity over time due to grime building up on glass, this will weaken the laser as it passes through the lens.
3. Try cleaning the lens with a CD lens cleaner. It may need a couple of cleans.

yeah should be a layer problem or a region problem. either ur player is not recognising a double layer dvd, or u hav a dvd with wrong region code. use a gud dvd player. if u dont hav a player like powerdvd, then use media player 11 and install k-lite codec pack (freeware) which has a built in dvd decoder, get a region killing software, i suggest dvd region free from dvdidle.com. if all the above methods are not working then you hav a older dvd-rom which doesnot read new double-layer dvds, get a new rom, nothing else to do... hope this helps u.

Your DVD player may be out of date with the newer DVDs. Time to get an upgrade.

Install newer drivers, something like the basic ROXIO drivers.
Or try the demo version of ANYDVD at Slysoft.com
You can test it for 30 days. You will have to pay for the code after that.
I recommend the ANYDVD ( I have it on my home PC) since it has great drivers for playing any type of DVD. The key part is the set of codecs you get, and ANYDVD has the full lot , with free updates

Sounds like it is copyright protection software doing its job. Check the back of the DVD case for anything about DVD-ROM drives. Also restart your computer and attempt to insert the disk again, this time holding the shift key down for at least 25 seconds, this will prevent any autorun applications from loading and possibly causing your computer to act like nothing is there. Other than that I do not know, maybe its your dvd-rom.

as newer dvd,s are getting larger and larger data they need to be burned on to dual layer dvd,s
not all dvd players have this function so this is more than likely your problem
however dual layer dvd drives are quite cheap these days, infact most dvd drives come with dual layer as standard
good luck
