Most likely one of the group one metals - they are kept under oil because of their high level of reactivity. From your description it's not possible to say which one it is.

It is certainly one of the Group 1 Alkaline Metals.

It will be either Lithium (Li), Sodium (Na) or Potassium (K) - usually Caesium (Cs) and Rubidium (Rb) are too reactive.

Lithium, Potassium and Sodium when put in a half-full water trough will actually ignite.

Caesium and Rubidium will blow the glass trough apart !!

Francium (Fr) is so reactive and is highly unstable.
