The first thing I would do is drain and flush the hot water heater. Turn off the water valve above the hot water heater and hook a hose to the bottom of it and open the valve to let it drain. Search the web for more info on doing this. Anyhow after it is drained open the valve and let it fill back up, you can repeat this a couple of times if you wish to fully flush the water heater out. There is a rod that goes into the top of the water heater that can corode and should be repalaced after so many years. This can hepl eliminate the smell. Otherwise look into a good watersoftner and filtration system. If you already have a softner check the salt levels, I usually add 2 bags a month sometimes 3. You can also buy a whole house water filter for under a 100 bucks at your local home center. Good luck and I hope you find the problem.

There might be sulfur in the water. Years ago I had a house that had sulfur water. Do you have a well? You can get filters to take the smell out or you can call a water softener company to come give you an estimate.

I have had the same problem at times. Someone told me to drain the water tank. I also heard the smell comes from not running water often enough. I'm not home often so I don't use a lot of water. When I am home for a few days, the smell doesn't seem to come.

that is possible, if I were you I wouldn't drink it and call somebody from the water company. This sounds like stuff you really don't want to mess with.
