It's called time distortion, and is a well documented function of dreaming.
As a state, it can be engaged outside of dreaming. Have you ever been in an accident, where time appears to slow down, and everything moves in slow motion? This is time distortion where events slow, and sports persons who are involved in bat and ball sports at a high level often use this technique to hit fast moving objects - by slowing time down.
Conversely, dreaming speeds time up, so that many events take place in a very short period of time.
Ain't the brain cool!?!

Probably what is more interesting is that the EEG patterns that are thought to be the dream state are rather fast, seems that it goes faster then life actually does implying that the dream takes a short time.

Because a person's perceptions can become distorted while in such a state. Time may seem to pass at a different rate for people who are dreaming.
