Wow, a sensible question!
I believe we strengthen our position in the world. There won't be anyone literally holding us over a barrel.
We spend more time and money in the Middle East than warranted because of oil. Do we do any other significant trade with that area?
I believe our unbalanced support of Israel would change somewhat. Not a lot, because wanting to eradicate a sovereign state is still wrong, but you might find us pressuring Israel to conform with UN mandates that they presently aren't.
I believe also we may start to focus on other problems around the world. If the Middle East loses its importance in the world, its problems rank alongside Darfur, Sri Lanka, etc.

US-Mideast relations would simply change, not go away. The primary problem in the Middle East where America is concerned is NOT oil.....you buy oil from them no matter what.
The issue at hand in the eyes of a lot of middle-east people has been USA's unwavering support of Israel, even when Israel is clearly in the wrong and broken parts of agreements.
Of course, Palestinian forces have done the same but they sure as hell get a mouthfull. Until the US has a FAIR policy in the Middle East, it will continue to have stressed relations. Alternative fuels will just allow us to go back to the REAL reason for tension in the Mid-East.

First, a company or the government will have to build the infrastructure to deliver the alternative fuel. (don't see that happening anytime soon and no one wants the inefficient gov't to do this)
But to answer your question, the Mideast would be on its own. They can go after each other all they want.

As long as brother Neil Bush is oil ambassador to Saudi Arabia there will be no alternative fuels.
