As Bjorn said, it blocks all open ports and informs you if any program is trying to connect to the internet. This software protects you from hackers and hence your data on your PC remains safe. Why do you even need a firewall?

Because if you do not have a firewall, your computer is able to be seen on the internet by anyone. Sicne they can see it they can exploit holes that are created by either software or your operating system.

A firewall just blocks the ports that would normally be open and restricts unauthorized access to your 'puter.

Firewalls protect you PC from Hijackers and viruses if a hijacker takes over your machine he can get your info like if you use your credit cards or banking info, he can all erase this off you machine so a firewall especially nowadays is very important

Firewalls protect you from hackers. If there was no firewall, hackers would be able to get into your computer and cause great damage or steal confidental information.
