Hello,

I am considering learning php to develop/modify php scripts to my own taste.

My question is how many days would it take to learn medium level php if I can give around 3 hours per day.

To let you know about my programming background, I am an expert in HTML and general web server management. I can grasp things very quickly and I have also modified a couple of php scripts to a little extent by following various examples and using general logic.

I do not know how fast you can pick things up. I picked php up in a matter of hours but that is because of the great documentation that they have online at http://www.php.net and I knew perl, asp, java, and asp.net. And prior I used C and C++ to write cgi scripts. So php was just getting my head around the syntax.

Depends on you to answer your question.

I'm also learning PHP and I've no other background of programming. Can I hope to understand this within 2 weeks, if I work for 4-5 hours a day on it?

Just learn by examples. This is the best way to learn one programming language. Go to php.net or search the relavent things in yahoo. This helps you a lot.

I learn PHP+MySQL for only a few hours by the aforementioned ways of learning.

That depends on your general programming understanding. You are going to need to be prepared to spend months to learning how to program then you need to keep improving your skills through practice. You can build basic things fairly easily in PHP, you just need to have a basic understanding of programming. I recommend using dreamweaver to help you get started. Dreamweaver automatically generates a lot of php and MySql (the database I'm assuming you would be using) code.

You can download a trial version of Dreamweaver at adobe's website:

1-Go to www.php.net
2-Download and install your php binaries (I downloaded zip version and unzipped it and it works fine)
3-Read the extensive documentation at http://www.php.net/docs.php (you can download it as a single html page). There you will find all info about configuration and usage. It's easy and full of examples. If you already know any language like c++, java, javascript or even vb or perl it should take about 1 day... if you don't know maybe will take 1 week...but I think no more. It's easy.
