It is common in all the GCC countries that an employer (sponsor) has to keep the passports of all of his employees. Even though the labor and immigration laws did not stipulates to keep the passports with employer, it became a common practice over here. The main reason I believe that, to stop employees moving freely or traveling their home countries without the knowledge of employers. Honestly I can say that it is safer and reduce the crime rates like absconding etc.

Cheers.

It's against the law EVERYWHERE if an employer keeps a passport of an employee also when it' s done often for so called "security" reasons.

Keeping sombody's passport means restricting this person's movment (like a travel ban). A passport is the property of the issuing country and is not supposed to be handed over to anybody byside if ordered so by a court.

I do not know what kind of passport you hold, but mostly it's written on the last page: This passport is poperty of..............
That's why you are a passport HOLDER and not OWNER.

Take care!
