In France anyway. There has been less and less snow in recent seasons, but more and more crowded slopes and accommodation. Seems like some resorts are treating lift passes like a monopoly, charging around 200 euros for 6 days.

Running a ski resort is expensive.

Snow Cats cost about $250,000 and a new chair will run anywhere from $2,000,000 up to more than $8,000,000, it takes awhile to pay those things off. Add to that rising fuel and electricity costs (yeah, those lifts run on electricity and even a small resort uses thousands of dollars worth of electricity a day), maintainence costs on equipment, paying all the employees and insurances costs (huge in the states) and you've got a huge amount of expenses to cover.

You aren't going to see ticket prices come down to much until fuel prices come down and people stop suing everytime they fall down.

Hey, there's always someone worse off. I've just got back from Whistler where a 10 day pass set us back £300 each! In France it would have been about £200! As far as less and less snow, France had a lot last year. I skied Morzine before Christmas in nearly 2 foot of powder, on top of a good metre base. This is, hopefully, just a one off.

Ski lift passes are so expensive as the money they raise is used to take care of the lifts and slopes. With the lack of snow and the artificial snow that has to be made the cost of maintenance is bound to be more than ever. The ski patrols also need to be paid and think how many times the pistes need to be groomed (those guys work overnight in all conditions in order to allow us to ski).

Yeah I know the feeling!

I live in the heart of the Canadian Rockies and I can barley get out a couple times a year because it cost's so much! I think we are up to 70$ a day in some place's here. It's just not fair...but hey just one more reason to get into back- country riding!

that's about $262 US dollars, or $43 a day. that's about the same as the average mtn here in the U.S. it's been that way here for quite some time now. perhaps France is just catching up to the industry standard.
