There are a variety of different kinds of computer virus. Some cause major problems, deleting or corrupting data, stealing your passwords, logging your keystrokes, etc.
Some are just annoying, but aren't necessarily malicious - some virus writers just want to see how far they can get one of their progs to travel on its own, and how many computers it can infect before it is shut down.
Most work by exploiting leaks and loopholes in operating system security - attempting to keep from getting a virus by using anti-virus software is pretty much useless, since the first people to load new anti-virus software and get the latest updates are the very people writing the viruses in the first place.
Most of the code is written in assembly or some other low level machine code. This allows it to make changes to your registry without throwing up a bunch of warning signs, and keeps the file size small so that it can transfer itself much faster.
Your best bet is to delete e-mails from people you don' t know, and never click on an attachment unless you know who it came from. If you download files - make sure to keep an eye on the ratings of the people you are downloading from, and obviously if you are trying to download a 4-5 minute song, and the file size is '3k' you know darn well it isn't an MP3 file.

Computer viruses are nothing but programs that people write to run damaging or self-multiplying operations on your computer.
Usually a disgruntled programmer finds a weakness in a particular operating system or software (outlook) and then uses a string of code to exploit that weakness.
There are no defined segments of code that make a virus a virus. They are all going to be different.

viruses are no more different then a medical viruse having the same desire to live.Artifical lifeforms created by a sumpreme number and alpha system like basic language. The same system has been observed in medical experiments also once introduce to a host it feeds on the enviroment and breed more babies viruses. More advanced or even a different breed all together.
