A "swamp cooler", but it is no good in high humidity. Also, you can buy a portable A/C unit for around $500, check shopping.com or pricegrabber.com for those. Good luck! :)

You can't go wrong with an attic fan.

They install in the attic floor with a louvered opening to the house or in a louvered opening in the attic wall with self-closing louvers in the house ceiling. They suck cool night air into the house through open windows and force it out the attic. When sized properly they can do enough air changes that the whole house reaches the outside air temperature within minutes. They will provide all the cooling you need except on those few nights a year that it stays hot and muggy all night.

You are running a fractional horsepower motor and pay for hundreds of kilowatt hours. If you had an equivalent air conditioner you would be paying for thousands of kilowatt hours so the savings are significant (beyond the initial cheaper cost).

Even if at some point you put in an air conditioner, running the attic fan for a while will get the hot air out of the attic (140 degrees on a bad summer day) and ease the load that the air conditoner will need to battle.

The other alternative to air conditioning is the architectural way of building the structure/house. There are some great architectural designs which have superb ventilation facilities. These kinds of ventilations allow light and air pass through easily and make the place a lot comfy and bright.
I am not exaggerating but, there is a science called 'Vastu'. It originated in India a long time ago. It describes all the architectural techniques by which a house or a building can be made superbly.
