Rainbows are produced by refraction and reflection of visable light as it passes through rain drops/or lots of water vapor in the air (that's why they are usually seen after it rains). Blue light is refracted more than red light causing a separation of colors.

Water vapour high up in the air acts as a prism(glass block) and disperses the white light falling on it into the colours of the rainbow. red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. ( ROY G. BIV)
