I'm still amazed that my kids schools don't have some sort of security protection besides a few hidden cameras. You can just simply walk up to the door, walk in and if your a bad guy/girl who knows what can very easily happen! There's bouncers in bars yet no one to watch the schools during school hours when children are inside?

To those people who think I'm being over protective or insane. I personally don't care what it LOOKS like and yes, I would send my kids to school there because I'd know they are being looked after and guarded and a guy in a uniform doesn't intimidate me. I care more about my kids safety so I'd be likely to send my kids there more than any other place and maybe the school's in YOUR area have to go right through the office's but that's not so in my area. What's a secretary and a principal going to do against an armed man anyway? Give me a break! I care about my kids and I don't care if I do sound over protective and silly to you, I'd rather sound a certain way then be stupid and not try everything I can to protect MY kids!

Sidenote:We live in a different world and time than we did even ten years ago. Like it or not, there is more violence and deaths. And no, it's not just because we are hearing more about it either! There IS! If malls, bars and every other place can have bouncers and security guards, the schools should be our FIRST priority! Our children attend there everyday! And while on the subject. The metal detectors sound great also! They do it in airports! I'll do anything to protect my kids!

Also, no one said anything about kids NOT needing to be taught at home by their parents and how it starts at home. ITA. It does start at home but that's no reason NOT to have security in our schools!

I agree with you. In today's society, there are way too many pervs who can sneak into schools, gang bangers, and should I mention that every year, more and more children are getting murdered at school. Remember Columbine??
Every school needs locked doors, and security guards.

Tell me this, would you be comfortable as a parent who was new to the community sending your child to school there? If the school feels a need to post that much security, what does that tell you about the neighbourhood or the history of the school? It might be assumptions you have that turn out to be wrong, but are you going to send your kid there? I wouldn't.
Secondly, I don't think schools need to go that far. Maybe in the States things are different than here, but here, generally, all doors get locked during school hours. The only door that is open to the public during school is the front door, which is connected to the main office. You have to go through the office to get into the school. There are two secretaries, a principle, a vice principal, and various staff in the office at al times. Think a crazy person is going to make it through without even being questioned?
And for all those of you who say we need all this stuff in schools, how about all this stuff being taught as wrong at home. How many school shootings are done by adults? How many are done by kids? It's normally the kids. These kids need more wholesome family lives, and they need some structure at home. They need to be taught right from wrong, and the parents need to pay more attention to what these kids are doing at home and away from home.
It all starts at home folks, and it's time we learned that. There was no issues when I was in school. Doors were always open, people came and went. High school was fun, not scary. It's time we went back to that day and times.

It would depend on the school. If you live in an area in which there is a lot of crime or a real danger that someone will come in off of the streets, maybe the answer is yes. If you live in a low-crime area, than the answer is no.
Do you want money to go towards placing security guards at doors when there is a very low threat or would you rather have the money go to real, effective programs to identify and help troubled students before they become a danger to themselves and others?
Remember that according to statistics, children are far less likely to get hurt at school than they are in their own homes. Should we place an armed security guard in your home?
You should consider what the possible threats are and then assess their likelihood.

Great idea. We can also build a 50 foot wall around the borders. I heard that security guards work for free at schools.
We need to have one entrance and exit for all people entering and exiting during school hours, manned by a person with a metal detector screening everyone. Also, we need parents to not raise children to take their guns to school, or not have guns at all. That will help.

The doors to my children's schools are locked an you must ring a bell to get in. They have cameras and can see who is ringing the bell. Still, I think there should be security guards present. Especially in the beginning and end of the day when people are coming and going and evereyone can't be watched.

unless your going to have metal detectors at every entrance what difference would it make? they can post 400 officers in the building if no one checks my bag or body i can still shoot someone its just harder to get away, but most of these people who do these thing are not expecting to get away so it would solve nothing
