My microwave sits on my kitchen counter - lately, it has been turning on by itself. I hear two beeps, and then it starts going. There is nothing touching any of the buttons, and no radios or cellphones nearby that could be sending a signal. Often, I am not even in the same room. Once it turns itself on, the only way to trn it off is by opening the door - the Pause/Cancel button will not work. After a few minutes, the buttons will work again.

The microwave is about 2 1/2 years old, and we have never had any problems with it. What could be causing this???

Sounds like you have a defective component. Namely the microcontroller.

Probably has some sort of short. I have a car that has automatic door locks, and the passenger door only stays locked on its own when someone wants to get in that side. Who knows? I'd dump it and get a new one.

It heard that Congressman William Jefferson (D), Louisiana, was looking for a new appliance in which to hide more bribe money.

It sounds like you have a ghost problem.
Who ya gonna call? GHOST BUSTERS!
You might also need to smash it with a sledge hammer.
