Here are the basics-1. Took the gas tank, coils, spark plug wires off in order to put on a new valve cover. (Gas tank was not totally removed, just unbolted and put to the side, so nothing came unhooked). Put it all back together, wont start. I am pretty sure the plug wires in the correct order, because they only go back on one way. (Too short to force another way). Here is what it "sounds" like- It tries to start, begins to rumble like is going to, "pops" (quiet backfire) and does not start. What did I hook back up wrong? If ithelps, it is an 83 Honda Nighthawk 650.

Thanks to the 2 answers so far. I am going to look at both of those possibilities when I take it all apart again. But please keep suggesting. I am pretty sure I hooked the coil wires up right because they were so old and bent, they kind of went right back to where they were.

When you moved the fuel lines you may have disconnected the lines. If the bike has a vacuum line for the fuel tank, you may have swapped the fuel and vacuum lines. I used to have an Interceptor(Honda) that was like that.

If you removed the coils, you may have reversed the wires that power them.

I didn't mean the spark plug wires. The wires from the wire harness to the coils. Just in case you misinterpreted my answer.

nicely, whether it is "clicking", then it mindset it is electrical powered, because of the certainty the engine starter isn't getting the amperage it demands to start. you could take the battery cables off , sparkling them unquestionably of any white powder residue ( battery acid solidified ), and scuff them each and each of how right down to a silver sheen so they're going to make nicely electric touch. examine your cable connections each and all the mindset by skill of skill of, to the starter, and so on. seem for loose bolts/nuts, corrosion, and so on. you could experience you're charging the battery, yet whilst there is white powder everywhere the connections, you is probable no longer charging it actually. you will desire a voltmeter to look into now no longer in simple terms the cable you connect the charger to, whether the authentic terminal interior the middle, to work out if the voltage is getting to the battery. in certainty, in simple terms sparkling each and each battery terminal ends, cable and battery, and retighten, then recharge. Are you making use of a small trickle-charger, or a extra perfect, extra genuine one? If a trickle, it is going to take a protracted on a similar time as to fee it up sufficient, could be 6-8 hours. while you're leaving it attached, and look at a quick circuit, you could no longer be actually charging it, the two. i've got bounce-began my motorcycles with automobiles ( you probable have a 12-volt technique, no longer a 6-volt! do no longer take a seem at it you probable have a 6-volt, it is going to break it ). besides, be sure your total connections are sparkling and shiny, and look at an sufficient charger, or alot of endurance.
