Prune any type of tree when the tree is dormant. I dont know where you live, but I live in the "northern climes." January and February here is the best time to prune. The plants are dormant. If you live in a different climate, you will need to know your own dormancy time for trees. It will usually be when all the leaves have turned and fallen and definately after the harvest. Checkwith a local nursery if you are unsure when your trees are dormant. In areas where there are four seasons, it is easy to determine when they are dormant...winter.

A crabapple? Prune them anytime it is above freezing. Almost impossible to hurt those trees. But late winter, early spring is best!
