I think we are all guilty of that from time to time.

I don't know anyone that does with everything they say, well maybe I do and just haven't worked it out yet.

Yes, I have 2 "acquaintances" who do this all the time. And neither of them are Irish!! It's very disturbing. I actually think they start to believe their own lies after a while. I get very annoyed by this - it makes me question almost everything they say but yet again, more lies just roll off their tongues. Most of it isn't even an exaggeration of the truth, it's downright porkie pies!!

yes, this is caused by low self esteem, the person may have been bullied/ignored a lot and feel the need to draw attention to themselves in order to validate their 'worth' they do not see themselves as having any worthwile qualities and so make some up! because they have a skewed look on reality the stories/lies can become outrageous and totally unbelieveable but they just can't see it. A person like this needs serious help.

I know no fewer than seventeen such people. Some of them have been paroled from prison after being incarcerated for murder; some of them have spend time in psychiatric hospitals because they have delusions of being porcupines and some of them are secret operatives for the N.S.A. (no such agency). The lies they tell about their experiences in the field, in the slammer or wherever would boggle your mind. I practically have to live with this twenty-four/ seven and IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish someone on Yahoo! Answers would recommend a good psychiatrist who's willing to make a house call to my station here in Antarctica (where I'm part of a team studying the dining habits of penquins) to help me cope with hearing all this phoney-baloney.

I was married to someone whom used to make up stories all the time. He would make up stories about I and the children as well and other people and it became very embarrassing. It got to the point where I would not even believe things he told me everyday. many times it nearly destroyed my marriage. he would tell stories to his employer, colleagues and to teachers at school. Its not funny and I feel sorry for someone whom has to deal with a person like that.

Yes I do! I know that some of the 'stories' that they say are so NOT true, The truth gets stretched so far it's unbelievable! And their lives are probably as interesting as watching paint dry!!
But I just sit back, not saying a word, keep my opinions to myself, and know that talking shite gets you nowhere! My life is FAR more entertaining! (but I don't let them know that!!)

No, but there's a guy at my millionaires club who I sometimes drop off in my chopper who is like that. Just the other day I had to interrupt a meeting where I was brokering a multi-billion dollar gold transfer when he called me to say that he had a new mobile phone - the liar.

Yes I do know someone who does that, it is very sad. I usually just say the right 'ooooohs' and arrrs' as compulsive liars can get very agressive if challenged, like cornered rats they will go for the throat to protect their lies. One compulsive liar insisted that elephants live for 600 years (each) and he is a school teacher!
