When visiting Thailand can we feel safe when going out to restaurants or do we have to worry about cleanliness problems?

...my friends just got back from two weeks in Thailand. The food is very very good. The restaurants in the hotels etc., are very clean but some open-air "on the street" restaurants that they went to were not - the cooks had a bucket of water at the side and would just dip the dirty plate in and give it to next person.....sometimes still food stuck to it....
but, they had a wonderful trip and didn't get sick.... and would go back in a heartbeat.
...I live in Canada and our restaurants are not always as clean as they should be and I have heard horror stories about them here and USA...

Yes. You do have to use common sense and I do not recommend eating from street venders unless you hve a strong stomach. Make sure any soft drinks you enjoy have ice with HOLES in the ice but most restaurants are very safe.
