Hell no dont use a applet. Right click my computer on your desktop or start menu and then select properties. After that click the hardware tab and then click device manager. You should see your card under network adapters.

By "type" I'm assuming you mean Type B or G, etc
If your laptop is only a few years old or newer it most likely has Type G
You can also check in Device manager Under Network Adapters for Type

right click my-computer and select properties, click hardware tab and click and open device manager. there under the wireless device category ur card shud be visible, with the name u r looking for... hope this helps

Ummm... read the directions that came with your laptop.
Other than that, you could read the specifications that are written on the outside of the box that it came in. It should say something like 802.11x. With "x" being b, g, or n.

then type devmgmt.msc and press enter.
Expand the Network Adapters item

put belarc advisor
download it --> run it ----> it will tell u everything about ur computer in details
no problem its safe to do that ..most good companies like HP recommend this
