I recommend Dell laptops. You can get a great machine with their specials and coupons. I have 2 dell laptops, one is 6 years old and runs great. Take care of it and it will take care of you.
The current coupons and specials are available at http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html
Good luck.

To be completely honest, most of the big manufacturers like Dell, HP, IBM, Gateway etc. use mostly the same components. Though, the motherboards, batteries and such are specially made for each.
Really the determining factor would be customer service and the ability to get the item fixed.
You will want to look around town to find out if any of those companies have authorized service centers in the area. That means if something goes wrong with it, you can just bring it to a local shop instead of sending it out to get it fixed.
Dell requires you to send it to them to get it fixed, but their customer service people are very helpful. I also think they offer a 3 year insurance/warranty on their products that covers even accidental damage. Double check the fine print.
HP, Compaq and Gateway will have service centers locally if your town is bigger than around 25,000 people. IBM is a little different, but they are usually pretty good as well.
You will get people who swear one brand sucks and another brand is awesome. I have had people who say that they will never buy another HP computer, they will only buy Compaqs from now on. Too bad Compaq is the same company as HP.

I have repaired computers for many years, and I gotta say Dell will be your best choice. While MAC's are good you have to understand they are the underdog with a very strict policy on their code for software operation, this way they are naturally less subject to viruses and other harmful things out on the web. BUT... this also holds true to the good software or trusted programs you intend to run on your MAC. Compared to a PC it is difficult to sometimes find the software you may want that is MAC compatible, remember they are completely different operating systems. I won't say PC's are better, just at this point much more wide spread and easier for overall use with just about any software. PC's are more suseptible to viruses because there programming code is more available so software can be developed to cater to everyone. MAC is an exclusive company.

I would go with a Mac. I was a PC user my whole life until I got an iMac and it's SO much better. Especially with laptops, you run the risk of viruses and feeble software.
