There is a very easy explanation here:

We are very similar genetically with Chimpanzees (and other apes) not because we ARE Chimps, but rather because we
share a common ancestor with them.

Are you your cousin? Did your cousin beget you? No! You both share the same grandparents, hence you share many of the same traits!

In fact, we also have a lot in common with lower order animals. Science has shown that the more we share in common in terms of genes, the closer in time we shared a common ancestor. So we have a lot mor ein common with Chimps than with New World Monkeys, but a lot more in common with New World Monkeys than with Dogs, and a lot more in commoon with Dogs than with Reptiles, andmore in common with Reptiles than Fish.
