I wish to send a friend an important warning but I don't want him to know it came from me. If I use a different email address, is there a way for him to track it to my computer?

if you use a hotmail . yahoo , or other web based emails i wouldn't worry about it , because neither are going to give out your personal information

You would have to spoof the email headers, but there is always a header that says what the originating server is. There is no easy way to do this from the email applications on your desktop as far as I know. If you know how to program, you might be able to make this happen. (For example if you had a hosted PHP provider, you could make a quick script that would do this, and as long as your whois is privately registered, they won't have any way of tracking it, except calling the hosting provider directly).

The quickest way would be to create a free aol account and send it from there. Then they'll have no way of knowing. I'm curious as to what your "important warning" is exactly.

Unless he is FBI I don't think so, ip addresses are what gives your computer away thats how they are tracked. Can you use a different computer?

I doubt your friend knows your computer's ip address though lol

yes, you can be tracked. IP addresses are embedded into each and every email you send, and yes, you can be found. nothing is anonymous when it comes to email.

if you wish to threaten someone like that, which is illegal in the first place, i would think again.

yes, but only the ip address, unless you are engaged in a crime, in which case, a law enforcement agency can retrieve the exact data from the server host. each computer has a machine number/identifier built into it in the BIOS.

Yes, they can check the header details, which will include your IP address.
