I’m turning 18 in a few weeks, and I went yesterday with my friend to get her belly button pierced [funniest thing ever haha] but anyways, I really want to get my lower lip pierced on the side. But, I heard labrets really mess up your gums and teeth, is that true? If so, are they’re ways to prevent it (besides not getting it done)? I read something about an acrylic back (or whatever its called, not the stud) instead of a metal one?

I actually had this piercing done. Althought it was very cute.. for um about a month. it started to hurt. the bar was long.. got stuck under my top tooth and would pull on my lip talk about ouch, then when you turn it to make sure it doesnt get yucky and oh it will get yucky it hurts.. about 8 weeks later it was very pretty.. but then it started to get aggervated at that time my skin actually started to grown over the stud(in the inside of my mouth) it was very painful.. I took the piercing jewelery out for one hour to clean my mouth.. and it actually healed.. today 3 years later I'm stuck with a pretty ugly scar on my face.. so I would have to say think really hard about it before you go along with something permenant.
good luck.

Definitely true. A labret piercing can erode your gums and this is permanent.

You can try wearing a fishtail labret stud, or you can try something like PTFE or bioflex material. Check out http://www.bodyartforms.com for great jewelry at good costs.

(Though I have heard bioflex ends up being uncomfortable.)

You shouldn't wear an all acrylic (plastic) stud because acrylic is not a very good material and attracts bacteria like crazy. You definitely can't wear it at all in a fresh piercing.

So all you can do is either not get it, or if you do get it, talk to your piercer at length about placement of the piercing, because this can prevent gum erosion.

Also if you do get it done, take pictures of your gums once a month so you can check for erosion easily. :)

yeah i'd suggest looking up flat-head plastic labrets
