Well... lets see. Italy was occupied by the French, the Austrians, the Spaniards and the Pope. In 1861, the kingdom of Sardinia& Piemonte started a war of re-unification. The most colorful character of the war of re-unification was Garibaldi who, together with his "bersaglieri" (men with red shirts) conquered Sicily and disembarked in Naples, pushing out the spaniards. The re-unification was closed wth the conquest of the Papal States and Rome in 1870. This put the church against Italy until prior to the WWII when Mussolini signed a treaty with the church (Lateran Treaty 1929), recognizing the autonomy of the Vatican.
