"Great Britain" is the name of the largest island of the British Isles, see below:

The British Isles are a group of islands off the north west coast of continental Europe comprising Great Britain, Ireland and a number of smaller islands. The term British Isles can be misunderstood and is sometimes considered objectionable, mainly in the Republic of Ireland and among nationalists in Northern Ireland. The term is not generally used in the Republic of Ireland.

There are two sovereign states located on the islands: the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The group also includes the Isle of Man, a United Kingdom crown dependency. Both states, but not the Isle of Man, are members of the European Union. Between 1801 and 1922, Great Britain and Ireland together formed the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1922, all but six counties in Ireland left the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom; the remaining six, mainly in the northeast of the island, became known as Northern Ireland.

The islands extend from Pednathise Head, Isles of Scilly in the south, to Out Stack, Shetland in the north; and from Tearaght Island, Ireland in the west, to Lowestoft Ness, England in the east. There are more than 6,000 islands, amounting to a total land area of 121,674 square miles (315,134 km²). Some sources include the Channel Isles in the British Isles although geographically they are an offshore French island group. The Faeroe Isles are geographically associated, but have never been under British rule and are not normally regarded as part of the British Isles.

No. Great is just a geographical term which was used to distinguish Britain from Brittany.

it's not an adjective to describe it's value, it's just to describe the size of the area. Great= Big, synonomous.
Great(er) Britain...

But I agree, it should be called Greater Islands of Dr. Moroe (sp?) with all the genetic freaks and inbred royals.

You are free to drop what you want, but you won't see it being dropped on the maps. It a geographical term, not a description.
