I think I answered your Q about Charleston earlier (btw- I added to it) I don't know Portland but I live in Charleston and I go to Atl. to visit a friend several times a year. Diversity: Atlanta will be more so. Larger(4 mill) , more cosmopolitan etc. Charleston isn't terrible on this issue but still is smaller(1/2 mill.metro area) and slower of pace. Schools: Very much depends on location. Like everywhere, it may come down to finances. If you can afford to live in Buckhead,Atl. and like the big city and traffic etc. then it might be ok. If you want something smaller but with the beach, culture and a unique city then Chas. has alot to offer. I work in the housing field and incidently home prices are fairly even across the board with these two cities. I would have to correct the gentleman about there beng no industry in Chas. There a quite a few. Perhaps he is referring strictly to downtown Chas. which alot of people do. The metro area is greatly spread out and has a number of technical industries like Bosch Corp. (semi-conductors), Nucor Steel , Westvaco(lumber/paper) and many others. Google is still considering moving in. I am curious why such a far move.

Charleston is a great city. Has a small town feel with benefits of a large city. Also good beaches nearby and an exellent Medical school so there is great medical care. There is also the College of Charleston and a technical schoold. It also depends on what you do for a living. There is really no industry here. Lots of professional jobs.

Charleston, SC. Charleston has been voted the most polite city in America numerous times. It is beautiful , very historic, and there are so many things for a family to do in the area.

I stay in Charleston S.C. so obviously i visit assert Charleston yet my 2d decision could be Savannah and then Jacksonville because Jacksonville is a significant city and that i dont favor to stay in a huge city.

Atlanta for a large city.....

I'd lean towards Charleston for a choice between your two. Been to both many times.....Charleston has the history, architecture, and culture...and is up and coming economically good investment re house.....Portland bored me....

To be completely honest. There is no place in the world that you won't have to go through diversity. But Atlanta GA is nice.

Comparing those three cities is tough because they are all so very different.

I think you would do well to make a list of what is really important to you: amenities, cost of living, schools, arts, sports, cultural venues, nature, air quality, weather, etc. Let your values and those of your family guide you.

Good luck!
