My husband and I were actually in this situation, but we had discussed it before hand. He had constant MRI's and Catscans to make sure his brainfuction was still at a high level (he was in a coma and on about a dozen machines). Each time it came back that he was still in there, it bought him another day. If it had come back with him in a vegetative state I would have had them run more scans, and with confirmation from the doctor that he was infact in a vegetative state that plug would have been pulled. We had talked about it before hand. I mean even if the person is in there..... who the hell wants to live in in a prison that is their own body. No way to communicate, or let others know what you are thinking or feeling. So either you are aware in a vegetative state and are living in hell. Or you aren't aware at all cause your not really there, and so it's a waste of energy keeping an empty shell going, when people need to be able to mourn. Believe me during those weeks I was being told constantly that he wouldn't make it through, I mourned, and then felt guilty for mourning because he wasn't actually gone. I'm so grateful for the reassurance that he was still in there and so gave him every fighting chance (and believe me it was a fight).

Talk to the ones you love about this. It's important for their own peace of mind that your parents, children and spouse all know. A living will is also a great thing.

I would want the plug pulled, I would not want to be kept alive in a vegetative state.

I would want the plug pulled. I enjoy life, hanging out with friends and family, running, biking, swimming, dating, living. As much as it would be hard for my family to do it. They know that I would not enjoy laying in a bed with a tube in my mouth and needles in my arms to feed me, and the bed sores would be the final straw. Unless there was some chance that I would come out of the vegetative state which most of the time there isnt I would request for family to let me be at peace.
