How to build a fast mouse trap car?

I went to M.I.T. as an undergraduate. I was a chemistry major but I had friends who were in Mechanical Engineering, and they all had to build a mouse trap powered vehicle. One of my friends won the competition hands down by making his vehicle nothing but a giant wheel, that used the mouse trap spring to move it forward. Since this particular competition was for the greatest distance traveled, he easily won, because his wheel just kept on rolling and rolling and rolling...
