I think that the previous (first two) answers are not helpful, just looking for points. I'm almost 75 years old and you probably know more about IT than me but, I had a computer before Hard disks were invented and the Internet not so widely used; but that doesn't address your question. Swapping your own files is no problem, ethics not involved. [The following is my opinion and practice.] Unauthorized swapping/copying of Programmes etc is acceptable if you perceive that the author has received adaquate compensation, in your opinion as payment for his works. In the case of independent developers, you should support them! Where Bill Gates is concerned there is no problem of ethics....Is he not GOD?

Get what you can, while you can... Leave the ethics to the Law!

Sounds like a school assignment rather than a simple question ....

I think the world wide web should remain free & uncensored.
Harm ... to capitalistic pigs ...lots.
To you & I ... none.

Benefits .. to you & I .. lots.
To caplitalistis pigs ... none.
