Being as that it is a Mercedes Benz, and German cars are always right at the top of being the most expensive to maintain and repair, AND being that you are the only one that knows your area(Cali/NY/TX??) a "BALLPARK" estimate is about the best you are going to get.

Most headgaskets are a job and a half to do depending on whether its a 4/6/or 8 cylinder(MB 10 or 12) and the average time to repair one is going to differentiate with each vehicle.

Assuming that yours is a 4cylinder (2.3) it shouldn't take more than 6-10 hours to complete plus parts with an average labor rate of $75.00 and parts being around $200.00.

Good luck and hope this helps.

Its not necessarily just a question of that. Your assumption of a flat cost, assumes no other issues were or are created by fixing it. If the engine overheated or had coolant get into the oil, you could end up w/a complete engine overhaul. No reputable garage would replace the gasket w/out having the head checked and redone to make sure it is in tolerance and not damaged. After that entire process is done and the engine reassembled, you might run into a problem that now, since the head is essentially acting "as new", the increase in compression, is causing some ring leakage past the pistons and you have an engine smoking problem. My advise, go for an entire rebuild unless the mileage was really low on that one.

The quote on my 96 Saturn was $1200. That was because of 10+ hours labor. You almost had to take the entire engine apart to remove the head. The resurfacing of the head is only $50 and a new gasket was $20. It turns out that the head was cracked which they could not know until it was taken apart.

Make sure you know if it is really just the gasket or you know what a rebuilt head (with the core charge) will cost.
