it happens the best thing is to buy a diamond that has inscription in the diamond. If you already have the diamond and it doesn't have an inscription I would suggest taken it to a reputable jewelry store like Zales for example if you take it to a reputable place they are less likely to rip you off they depend on their customers and don't want to lose business.

It's not common practice, but it does happen on occasion. (there's one in every crowd!) First, be sure to go to a reputable jeweler. And if you can, look at your stone through a magnifying glass and take note of the flaws and write them down. Then when you get your ring back, check the stone again to make sure it has the same flaws and is in fact, the same stone. Another good thing to do is get it appraised and insured. They will describe the diamond and you will have a certificate and if anything happens, insurance will cover it.

I have a very old blue-white diamond with a Miner's cut and I ALWAYS make sure I get the same stone back when I have to leave it with a jeweler. It's also insured and appriased.

They are being paid to do the best job they can for you.

Resizing takes about a day. Sometimes even a few minutes if you time it right. Swapping a stone would take over a week. Plus they would be losing money in the process with labor and a potentialy lawsuit.

You can either trust them or live with an illfitting ring.

I have heard this. If you have a lot of diamonds, you will notice, they have different depths. They can look the same "on top" if you are looking down on them. The depth, however, can be very different. The deeper the diamond the more it's worth. Watch Out.

Get a Picture taken of your stone by a jewler(a picture under those microscopes that they have)..A diamond is always unique...when you get your ring resized, bring in your picture and ask to see the new ring under a microscope...if the diamonds match up then you're safe...if not then you can take legal action, etc...

Actually, if you pick a prestigious jewerly store is better, but what you think is not usual. Anyway when you pick the ring uo from the store, you can try to cut a glass. Although artificial diamonds can do that too. Good luck!

Of course not. If you suspect something, you should have the ring appraised by a third party and have them brought up on theft charges if the stone was changed in any way.

A reputable jeweller would never do that as they would be out of business in no time. Always go to one recommended or one of the High Street jewellers, even if it costs more in the long run.

Not at all. No only is it not ethical, it is quite illegal. Basically what they are doing is theft and you can have them arrested for it. I would go back to your jeweler who swapped out the stone and tell them you know they switched it for a stone with less value and if they don't switch it back, you are going to the police. Odds, are they will switch it back.

No. Go to a jeweler that does on site resizing. You can pick your new diamond and they can resize in front of you. You'd be behind a glass of course.
