Engine braking doesn't hurt the engine, and if you're talking about accelerating, you can go all the way up to red line on the tach before you have to shift. Realistically, depending on how fast you want to accelerate, about 3-4000RPM is a good shift point.

Dont let rpm go in to the red line, either than that there's no problem, its eaven recomended insted of using breaks.

Most class "A" trucks go 1 million miles or more, using engine brakes often.
