I am a 25 yr old female who lives in Chicago, IL. I am very interested in joing a dance class. I have always loved to dance and still do. I am not experienced, I have never taken a class in my life. I wasnt a cheerleader or anything like that. I would like to join to learn how to dance but also for the exercise. What would be good exercise and alot of fun, which dance? And about how expensive are these types of classes and how long do they run for?

Since it's March and the class semesters have been underway for some time, might I suggest that you start out by giving a Jazzercise class a try? Given that you have never taken a dance class in your life, I think you might feel a bit intimidated walking into an existing class right now, even though adult beginner classes are offered on a drop-in basis at such places as Ruth Page School of Dance,
http://www.ruthpage.org/index.htm
the Lou Conte Dance Studio,
http://www.hubbardstreetdance.org/lcds_home.asp
and the Giordano Dance Center.

Instead, Jazzercise is very focused on making exercise fun and is not going to make you feel out of place for being ignorant about dance. I think if you first loosen up about dance through Jazzercise, you'll feel much more empowered to move onto a more serious adult dance class. There are Jazzercise franchises throughout the Chicagoland area.

Everything depends on where you go or are. Since you're in Chicago, I'll bet that you have a ton of resources but have no idea where to start. First off, try looking in the yellow pages for dance studios or go to a dance supply store and ask for recomendations of where to go. Many studios offer adult classes. The one that I attend has an adult class. Every two weeks, they start a new type of dance. They did some ballet, some jazz, some salsa, some belly dancing. The list goes on forever. It all really does depend on the studio. Just research some of the local ones until you find one that you are interested in that fits your budget. You're in one of the art capitals, so use that to your advantage! Good luck in your search!

When I was living in STL, I took a beginning ballet course for non-dancers that was wonderful. There's something about dance that makes everyone feel beautiful. Many studios will let you try a class before you sign up for a whole package. Check out the link below.
