You won't believe how easily led the general public are by media spoofs and public relations executives. TV programming and news announcements are mostly diversions and silly decoys put together by a an echelon of hidden public relations consultants whose job it is to keep a steady flow of interrupting the continuity of public life by making the stunning revelation or the big scoop for the benefit of an industry that feeds on its own inflated egos.
A way to understand the dynamics and political influence of the media is to look at parallels with the Roman arena and ask yourself the question as to what precisely is the social benefit of a form of communication that is mostly one way. The passive viewer is simply fodder that feeds the egotistical self preserving new technocratic aristocracy. In the dark ages the 'one way communication' of ideas and values was very much controlled by the Roman Catholic church whose 'public relations' experts operated with political anonymity within the halls of European courts influencing events by conspiracy and intrigue for the benefit of a cabal load of wealthy dynasties and royal scumbags. Social conscience has notionally changed the political landscape of the master/serf pecking order the last couple of hundred years or so but the same type of people who were once castigated as the oppressor have simply resurfaced in another guise. In modern parlance the old ancien regime has become the new consultant/technocrat regime in government and media circles who look after each other's position of privilege and prosperity by engineering their public personna, using their syphilitic control of the airwaves, so that they are loved and worshipped by sheep in the armchair.
Do I think Big Brother is the 'cause' of anything? There was a cause behind Big Brother that goes somewhat deeper than the soporific titivating of the senses but has a lot more to do with prime time advertising and the world wide trend in reality TV bearing all the traits and hallmarks of the Roman amphitheatre revamped into a modern idiom. No, Big Brother is simply Big Boring Humanity displaying all its sin and stupidity through the baroque of an art form that for centuries has disingenuously entertained demons.

No, but television is. While you are watching TV, you are in a hypnotic trance. The trance state is one in which you are fully conscious, but not of your immediate surroundings. Your awareness is narrowed down to a point, which in this case is the TV screen. Ever been watching TV and someone has had to talk to you twice to get your attention? Yes - then you were in a trance. While you were so, all your mental defences and filters were switched off and all the impressions channelled through the TV are just pouring into your head.
Slowly over a time you are made into just the type of shallow, consumer specimen the marketing people want you to be, and you can even watch Big Brother without thinking their is anything wrong with it, or yourself.
Try putting your TV in the loft for a couple of months, (preferably permanently), and see the change in yourself.

Whereas BB does, to an extent, reflect apects of our society it's useful to bear in mind that people 'learn' from TV.
Kids pick up accents (for example the inflection that many kids use which sort of turns every statement into a 'question'), adults pick up opinions, fashion tips and suchlike.
If TV didn't influence people's behaviour and opinions, then why would companies spend so much on adverts and sponsorship?
So what we're in danger of getting is a sort of 'feedback loop': TV picks up the 'worst' bits of our society, and these then become a sort of norm for many people... The cycle continues...
This is why positive role models are so important, and why voyeuristic TV which plays down to the lowest-common-denominator can be so damaging. It lowers the bar of our expectations in terms of behaviour.
So let's scrap BB and other trash TV and instead demand higher quality programmes that help us learn and develop!
We're worth it, right?

Wow, Manchester and yourself have really opened a can of worms with this one. Of course the public are influenced by what is shown on T-V, it is a very powerful media tool, but Big- Brother is not to blame for what happened this year, the only thing that came to the forefront was some of the contestants showed there true colours, and are now paying the price. I love the show along with several million other viewers, and i am not a Moron as someone stated in there comments about Big Brother fans.

Just gave a thumbs up to a previous answer its people that cause problems. My granddaughter was at the auditions for X Factor and saw some really good singers turned down and yet a guy dressed as a giant rabbit tap dancing got through. Why? simple they want people who the public can laugh at. Big Brother and all the reality shows are deliberately setting out to ridicule people. The sad thing is that there ratings will ensure that most of them survive. If the general public were not so eager to belittle each other and watch them they would be scrapped. Yep People are the cause of our decline.

Suffice to say it is NOT a reflection of society. Does anyone behave the same way when they know they're being watched? Of course not!
Big (damn, i hate this show) Brother is a clever money-making enterprise from Endemol (I think) and Channel 4. Charge the avid viewers 50p, 75p, £1 a week (I don't know/care) and for what?! To see a 'favourite' person kept in a studio in Elstree (Nth. London/Hertfordshire) for another weeks inane, stupid and pointless ramblings? Please...
Social experiment? Maybe the executives see it like that - how much of society's money can they line their pockets with.
Spare me, I think I'm going to be sick...

While I would not say it was the cause, or even one of the factors of the decline in social structure, i would say i view the people of this country as naive and easily led.
I say, things like big brother have come out as a result of the decline, and that they're not doing anything to help change anything about it. They're not causing it, nor are they probably making it worse, but they sure as hell aren't making anything better for anyone.

I think that it is one of the results of present attitudes in society to critcise others rather than the cause. The media encourage judgemental behaviour through programmes such as this .It is considered funny to make personal remarks and to disregard the feelings of others. It is also very cheap television. If it were just a 'one off ' it could be regarded as silly but we are constantly being bombarded with similar so called reality TV

Big brother is not the cause, it is just a symptom. People are so obsessed with celebrity / gossip / 'reality' and shallow, pointless idiotic and pointless TV / magazines / radio.
You know society has lost it's way when the latest antics of Jade 'famous for being stupid' Goody take up more time on the News than events of worldwide importance - How do you think the family of the latest victim in Iraq feels when they see the death of their son as less important than the slobbering drivelings of some big gobbed tart?
The only way to describe society today is Shallow. There is no desire to learn, grow, develop or better yourself. It's all about the latest thing, whats hot, whats in / out, have you got the latest ringtone / mobile / ipod - all vaccuous meaningless rubbish.
I visited an antiques shop the other week and chatted with the owner for over an hour, thouroughly enjoying the conversation. Do you know why? It was because I genuinely couldn't remember the last time I had an intelligent conversation with anyone!
We live in a society that tells you to do your best and when some people do achieve great sucess we shoot them down and call them Fat cat's!!
Today, people don;t know their past, are blinkered to their present and don;t care about their future.
Stop the world, I want to get off!
