ok ok ok im sick of hearing this question... we are a continent because we are one of the 7 large land masses... we are a country because we federated in 1901... and for all the confusion we are both a continent and an island

Probably because it was federated as a country before it was designated a continent. Plus New Zealand is part of the continent of Australia, but not the country so there are some countries within Australia the continent.

Australia is a COUNTRY because on 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a Federation, and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed.

Because the British claimed the whole darn chunk of rock as their own, and have defended their claim. It's just that simple. If someone else had challenged them and won, then it would be shared territory, but they didn't, so it isn't.
