Right now the H5N1 avian flu virus is killing 76% of the people who are infected.

There have been cases of human-to-human transmission, and it is mutating and acquiring the characteristics needed to spread easily from person to person. When that happens, there will be a pandemic.

Infected people – not birds – will spread the pandemic. Infected people will be contagious before they appear to be sick. Since none of us have had this virus before, we are all in danger of being infected. Because we travel by plane, it will spread across the world in a matter of weeks or days.

We can’t start to make a vaccine until it mutates – it takes 6 to 9 months to develop a vaccine and get it into production – 6 to 9 months after a pandemic begins.

We only have enough anti-viral medication for about 3% of our population. Our hospital beds are full now – there will not be beds for most flu patients.

The last serious pandemic was in 1918. The fatality rate was 2% and 50 to 100 million people were killed. Can you imagine how many people will die at 76% fatality rate?

I’m a Republican. I don’t care if someone who is interested in avian flu is a member of the Democratic Party, Constitution Party, Green Party, Socialist Party, or an Independent.

This is a huge problem, and we need all of the help we can get to prepare.

I think you are confused, Donald Rumsfeld owns stock in Roche Labs and sat on the board of directors since 1988 of Gilead Sciences inc., the California based company that originally developed Tamiflu.

The Avian flu was first discovered in 2004 in Vietnam, and to date has only taken just shy of 200 human lives.
