When using numbers in base 3, counting from 0 goes 0, 1, 2, 10, 11, 12, 20, 21, 22, 100, 101, 102, 110, 111, 112, 120, 121, 122, 200, 201, 202. 210, 211, 212, 220, 221, 222, and after that you are into 4 digit numbers.
The only digits possible are 0, 1 and 2.
In a two digit number, the first digit tells you how many threes there are, and the last digit is interpreted as in ordinary numbers.
So breaking 11 down, the first 1 indicates one times three, and the second 1 indicates a further 1 added.
When you look at a three digit number, the first digit tells you how many nines, the second tells you how many threes, and the last digit tells you how many ones. After doing all these multiplications, you add the results together.
I hope that explanation has helped.

I'm not sure how to "prove" it, but base 3 means for every 3 in the "ones" spot, you put a 1 in the "tens" spot. Normally, 2+2=4. But you can't have a 4 in base 3. So your answer is 1 with 1 "remaining" so to speak. I know that's not very clear, but keep trying, and have your teacher sit down and really explain it to you. Once it "clicks" you'll be fine.

In binary (base 2)

1 = 1
2 = 10
3 = 11
4 = 100
5 = 101
6 = 110
7 = 111
and so on......

So In base 3-:

1 = 01
2 = 02
3 = 10
4 = 11
5 = 12
6 = 20
etc...

Hope this helps
