When plotting graphs the first variable mentioned is placed on the Y axis therefore:

Plotting Voltage against Current would place Voltage on the Y axis. Current is the variable.

Hint: The values on the Y axis are dependent upon the VARIABLE value of the X axis.

e.g. Y = 4X + 3

If you are using MS Excel to produce your graph (or chart) then the chart wizard will put the y-axis on the side (usually left) and the x-axis goes at the bottom.

The y axis is the line that goes like north and south and the x axis is the bottom line that runs west to east!!
