He opened a passage to the New World. While he was not aware that he had landed on a new Continent, his detailed maps showed exactly how far you would have to travel to make it too this new land. Other explores would follow his maps and bring back new spices and gold for the Spanish empire. This would turn Spain into a world power for the next 200 years.

By "discovering" the New World, Columbus blazed the trail for Spain to conquer tthe native peoples, establish colonies, and plunder as much natural resources as they could get their hands on.
Realize that Columbus never intended these consequenses, and that if he hadn't discovered the New World someone else would have (probably still from Spain, the naval power at the time) with the same result.

Columbus was a secret member of the Priory De Scion which had a lot of secret power in Europe until they were outlawed in 1307 forcing them to go underground and becoming the Freemasons. I'm sure he had a lot of influence.
