Vee belts are still in common use not only in cars but in many industrial machines, they are cheaper than toothed belts easier to replace, and run quieter. You must get the correct size, the belt when in use should not go to the bottom of the pulley this is called 'bottoming' and would allow the belt to slip. The tension on the belt should be around about half an inch play on the longest side of the belt when pushed with a finger.
